Mimic Tangs, also known as Mimic Lemon Peel or Mimic Yellow, require a large, established aquarium with plenty of swimming space and rockwork. They are herbivores and need a diet rich in algae, with occasional meaty foods like frozen shrimp and mysis. They are semi-aggressive and should be kept in a tank with other peaceful fish.
Aquarium Setup:
- Tank Size: A minimum of 500 liters (125 gallons) or larger is recommended, especially as they can grow up to 8 inches.
- Water Parameters: Maintain a temperature of 72-78°F, a pH of 8.1-8.4, and a salinity of 1.020-1.025.
- Filtration: A strong filtration system is essential to maintain clean water.
- Substrate: A mix of sand and gravel is suitable.
- Rockwork: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding.
- Water Movement: Ensure adequate water movement to mimic their natural environment.
Diet:
Algae:
Mimic Tangs are herbivores and need a diet rich in algae. Provide seaweed like Japanese Nori, or other algae sheets.
Meaty Foods:
Include frozen brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and occasional live rock with micro and macro organisms.
Supplementation:
Consider vitamin supplements (including vitamin C) to help prevent or reduce Lateral Line Erosion (LLE).
Feeding Schedule:
Feed at least three times a day.
Compatibility:
Aggression:
Mimic Tangs can be semi-aggressive, especially towards other tangs and surgeonfish. They are generally peaceful with other non-tangler fish.
Tank Mates:
Choose compatible tank mates that are not aggressive or compete for the same food.
