Oblique-lined dottybacks are generally hardy fish that can be kept in a reef or fish-only aquarium, but they do require some specific care. They are semi-aggressive and need plenty of hiding places in their tank, like rockwork with caves and crevices. They should also be housed with larger, non-easily-harassed fish.
Water Conditions:
- Temperature: 72-81°F (22-27°C).
- pH: 7.7 to 8.5.
- Specific Gravity: 1.020 to 1.026.
- Ammonia and Nitrite: 0 ppm.
- Nitrate: Below 20 ppm.
- Filtration: High-quality filtration is essential, including a protein skimmer to maintain water quality.
Tank Size and Environment:
- Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons or larger.
- Hiding Places: Provide ample rockwork with caves and crevices for the dottyback to hide and feel secure.
- Tank Cover: Due to their jumping habit, ensure the aquarium has a lid.
Diet:
- Carnivorous: Dottybacks are carnivores and should be fed a diet of meaty foods, such as vitamin-enriched brine and mysis shrimp, chopped fish, and a quality flake food.
- Feeding Frequency: They should be fed multiple times daily.
Tank Mates:
Semi-aggressive:
Dottybacks can be semi-aggressive towards other fish, so it's best to keep them with larger, non-easily-harassed species.
Invertebrates:
Dottybacks will not bother most invertebrates, so they can be kept with cleaner shrimp, hermit crabs, snails, and urchins.
Ideal Tank Mates:
Consider clowns, damselfish, wrasse, tangs, dwarf angelfish, and butterflyfish.
