The Purple-lined Fairy Wrasse (Cirrhilabrus lineatus), also known as the Lavender Wrasse, is a beautiful reef-safe fish often found in the aquarium trade. These wrasses are native to New Caledonia and Australia, where they can be found in coral reefs at depths of 20 to 55 meters. They are known for their peaceful temperament and vibrant colors, making them a popular choice for reef aquariums.

Key Characteristics:

  • Appearance:

Males are more brightly colored than females, often displaying a lavender-pink base with yellow shading, a solid purple stripe, and blue lines or dashes along the body.

  • Size:

They can grow to a maximum length of 12 cm (4.7 inches).

  • Behavior:

They are generally peaceful and reef-compatible, but may become territorial with other wrasses, especially in smaller tanks or when multiple males are present.

  • Hermaphroditism:

Like other fairy wrasses, Cirrhilabrus lineatus exhibits hermaphroditic behavior, meaning they can change sex from female to male.

  • Diet:

They are carnivores and should be fed a diet of varied meaty foods, such as frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and high-quality marine flake and pellet foods.

  • Care:

They prefer mature, well-maintained tanks with ample hiding places and a tight-fitting canopy to prevent jumping.
